2020 ACM Awards: Lady A is Golfing, Writing New Music to Stay Positive

The group shares the uplifting meaning behind 'Champagne Night'

September 16, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected everyone differently, especially when you’re spending so much time at home.

Outfits that used to be staples when you’re in public have been shelved and comfy clothes have been commonplace. Now that things are reopening, those outfits are getting dusted off. For Lady A, radio row at the ACM Awards may mark the first time the group has put on jeans since the beginning of the pandemic.

While their comfy attire may have suggested otherwise, Lady A has spent their time in quarantine working hard on writing new music.

“At first we were on Zoom but now we’re getting in the same room, socially distant obviously,” Charles Kelley told RADIO.COM's Steve Grunwald live from the 2020 ACM Awards.

“That’s the one thing that’s kept me sane, trying to put all of our feelings into the music,” Kelley admitted.

While they’re optimistic that a lot of great songs will come out of the COVID-19 pandemic, they hope it isn’t an overwhelming wave of heavy music.

“Music is an escape so I’m hoping everybody doesn’t come out with really heavy songs,” Kelley said. “Sometimes you need a song like ‘Champagne Night’ that’s just fun and makes you feel good during this time.”

Speaking of “Champagne Night,” Lady A discussed the song that was born from the TV show Songland and called the experience and collaboration not only fun, but instrumental in crafting the tune.

Elsewhere in the interview, Lady A touched on a non-music activity that’s kept the same throughout the pandemic. Golf.

Kelley is a big golfer and the pandemic hasn’t interrupted his time on the links. After Dave and Hillary joked that Charles would take part in songwriting sessions while on Zoom at the golf course, he confirmed their suspicions.

“I was playing golf with Darius Rucker and I was pitching him songs on the golf course the whole time. He was like, ‘what have you been doing?’ I told him ‘I’ve been writing songs, you should cut it.’”

If there was ever a golf circuit in the Country music industry, Kelley would surely have a few pals to compete with as he’s recently played golf with Rucker, Luke Bryan, and Ryan Hurd.
